sefardinha:

I’ve noticed on Tumblr, and I think it is because of the particular strain of North American white kids in the suburbs on their macs leftism, that there is a huge fetishization/obsession with art/pictures etc. of non-white people in communist countries, as if this art is proof of the success of communism vis-à-vis race relations particularly in Latin America. Do you think antiblackness and anti-indigenous sentiment are not still extremely prevalent?

Lmao like how obvious it is that none of you have ever spoken to people that have left these countries fleeing for their lives. These people are still alive. They are our grandparent’s age, they are our age. Cuba is not a great place to live in. Talk to Cubans that have left and go back to see their family. Talk to Venezuelans that left Venezuela and speak to their families. They have no food, electricity is unreliable, people are routinely killed or attacked outside of their houses and their attackers escape justice thanks to corrupt government impunity. Talk to the Jews left in Venezuela that are in fear for their lives as the government has basically endorsed The Protocols as “recommended ideological reading.” Talk to my family that fled from Nicaragua after Sandinistas indiscriminately shot at houses in Managua, the country’s capital. Ask Angela Davis why she STILL backed the Soviet Union as it sent thousands of Jews to their deaths.

The majority of art documenting Cuba and other communist countries is done by artists heavily utilizing the white gaze and then returning (mostly) to Europe, which heavily exploits and dehumanizes countries through à travers modern colonialist tactics. Have some fucking nuance.

and fuck white communists.
